Awatapu College was represented by a group of our student leaders at the ANZAC parade. Ruawai and Josh (Head girl and boy) laid a wreath in rememberance of lives lost at war by New Zealand and Australian soldiers.

Shakespeare Success

On Sunday 1 April students from Awatapu College attended the regional Otago University Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival in Whanganui. This year the festival was hosted by Wanganui Collegiate School and it was attended by schools throughout the Whanganui, Rangitikei and Manawatu regions.

Our entry, directed by David Mock and Shaun Mahoney won the student directed section for their excellent sequence from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Congratulations to the whole team, including David, Shaun, Sarah Sturm, Josh Knox, Keiran Murphey, Harrison Gibb-Faumuina, Anna McKean and Patrick Boyle!

Awatapu dominates sidecar class at the National Secondary Schools Mini Moto Grand Prix

The sidecars became a bit of a major group undertaking in the latter parts of term 2 and through term 3 at Awatapu College with most of the Trades Students involved. The majority of the work was done by Antony Ladd, Ari Christensen and Angus Pearson, who put in a lot of weekends and evenings as well a large part of their holidays. Their efforts did not go to waste.

The three were joined by Jaden Hardy who was the swinger for Antony at the National Secondary Schools Mini Moto Grand Prix held at Manfield in the second week of the term 3 holidays where the four totally dominated the sidecar class.

They were on pole after practice and never relinquished 1^st and 2^nd place with a dominant display of superior speed and manoeuvrability. The starts did not always go well but superior speed and engineering always got them back to the front of the field. They won the points competition held over three races and finished 1, 2 in the final. Awatapu College’s Antony Ladd and Jaden Hardy are now the holders of the Sidecar Shield for 2011, the first school to wrestle the trophy from FAHS in the history of the event.

Supreme Award at Wearable Arts

Awatapu College swept the awards taking 3 of the 4 top honours in the Evento Wearable Arts exhibition last Saturday evening.

Jasmine Shadbolt took out the Supreme Award at Evento Wearable Arts exhibition on Saturday night. She also gained first place in both the Carnival theme section and the Recycling theme sections.

Not to be out-done Amy Liu won the Medieval theme section and the Under the Sea theme section was won by Vida Ravage.

Amy Atkins received a performance award in the Medieval theme section.

The annual competition attracted 62 individual entries from 10 schools in the region making Awatapu's success even more impressive.

Namiki Junior High visit

Students visiting from Namiki Junior High School in Japan had a fantastic time at Awatapu College. 19 students plus teachers attended classes for 10 days. We shared Japanese and New Zealand cultural activities and the group also got to see the wider Manawatu.

Farewells & Welcomes

At the end of last term we said good-bye to seven international students and this term have welcomed eight new students from Papua New Guinea, Germany, China, Russia, USA, Brazil and Malaysia.

Kapa Haka - Doing Awatapu College Proud

Our Kapa Haka team competed in Pae Taiohi on Monday this week at the Regent Theatre. Fourteen
high schools took part in nine Kapa Haka teams, all vying for one of four places at the national
competition which will be held in Whangarei in July next year.

The team has worked incredibly hard since March, giving up most weekends for practices. They
have been well supported by Head of Te Reo Maaori Rob Waaka and Whanau. We are very thankful
for the work of the two tutors, Pa Chris and Whaea Liza who have instilled a culture of hard work
and discipline into the Kapa Haka team, as well as providing a deep knowledge of performance.
The team has been selected to go forward to the national event next year. This is a first for Awatapu
College, and we are very proud of the achievements so far. Special congratulations go to Paris Evans, who
was named Manukura Tane (best Male Leader) of all the teams performing at Pae Taiohi. A lot of
hard work will now be needed to prepare for next July, but the challenge is exciting and the team
has displayed the commitment to move forward and take up the new journey.

International Celebration!

We have just celebrated a week long festival of cultures here at Awatapu College.

There was fine food, great music, and a HUGE turn-out of international costumes at our Friday assembly. Just one more way we celebrate our diversity of culture at Awatapu College.

This week students received a statement that shows the NZQA Exam fees that students must pay for NCEA. This is money that the school collects on behalf of the government. It is not optional. If a student's NZQA fees are not paid then they do not receive official NCEA Exam results.

Students may be eligible for financial assistance from the Government if their caregiver has a community services card, is a student, on a benefit or has low income. A form showing was information attached to the invoice.

Fees are due at the end of Term Two. After this they are no longer collected by school, but must be paid directly to NZQA and become a flat rate of $126.70.

Exam fees are payable each year that a student studies NCEA. The only exception is when a student is studying an internally assessed NCEA standard at year 9 or 10. In this case the fees are not due until the student reaches Year 11 or begins studying towards external standards.

Senior Honours Awards 2010

Thursday night at 7:30 in the Regent theatre was a very special time. It was a spectacular evening of successes and celebration. The senior students and their families, teachers and VIP’s gathered to watch Awatapu College's night of awards.

The choir had several sessions during the night and were fantastic! There were musical items from Metrobop, the saxophone quartet, and Jeong-Eun who sang a beautiful Korean love song.

The awards themselves showed just how hard the students worked during the year. Every student receiving an award had a huge smile and so, by the way, did the parents.

Secondary Schools Furniture Construction Awards

The inaugural Secondary Schools competition, organised by the

Central Districts Branch of the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association ( INC), was

held last week. The Association’s aim is to promote the use of sustainably grown,

decorative timbers.

Additional sponsorship for the awards was provided by Bunnings, and UCOL staff

judged the entries in two categories, Year 11 (Level One) and Year 12 (Level Two).

Awatapu College students won five of the six awards presented, a stunning effort.

Jimmy Carter Quiz

We Won

Awatapu College was the 2010 co-winner of the annual interschool competition, the Jimmy Carter Quiz. The quiz commemorates the visit of the former Amercan president to the Manawau in1982. It is organised by the Lions Clubs of the Manawatu.

The contest was very close, with Awatapu vying for the lead with St Peters College throughout the evening. By the end of the contest the two teams were tied and a further series of five questions failed to separate them. As a result the organisers decided, for the first time, to make a joint award of the Quiz Trophy to the two high schools.

This is the fourth time that Awatapu has won first place in the contest after a run of success in 1999-2001. However, last year the team placed second and were hopeful of improving their effort this year.

The team was made up of five students, each one representing a different year level: Thomas Austin, Kerrianne Joe, Edward Todd, Rory Robinson and Malina Hargreaves.

What a night!

The Awatapu College team went up on stage at the Regent on Broadway and showed what an incredible buch of talented students they are. Here is a link to the images Mr Dobson took. AWESOME!
