Year 12 RYDA Course

RYDA2

On Tuesday 9 May, Year 12 students attended a five-hour Rotary Young Driver Awareness course held at the Central Energy Trust Arena. This coincided with Road Safety Awareness Week. During the course, students learnt about hazards, distractions and risks while driving.  While the first is out of the driver’s control, the second two can be minimised by the decisions the driver takes.  They saw, at first hand, how if a vehicles speed increases by 50%, the stopping distance doubles - as represented by a dummy flying over a car roof on impact. Students also listened to stories about the impact that road accidents have on lives - a powerful and important message all drivers should be reminded of.

The students were provided a booklet about road safety, access to the road safety website and space to provide thoughts on each of the six workshops. We encourage parents to have a discussion with their student about this.

Awatapu would like to thank Horizons for the funding provided, the Rapid Response Team for the BBQ lunch, to Rotary who provided staffing, and the RYDA team for a thought provoking day. Hopefully, our young people will make good choices around road safety.
