Notification of School Closure

Due to conditions caused by the remnants of Cyclone Debbie, the decision has been made to close Awatapu College on Thursday, 6 April 2017. This decision has been taken in conjunction with advice sought from Horizons Regional Council.

Of concern is potential flooding from the rising levels of the Manawatu River which runs adjacent to the College. Our current information is that another weather bomb is likely later tonight which could further increase the chances of flooding. As well as the dangers of flooding, there is also the situation of the safety of staff and students travelling to and from school.  Already, a number of staff and students have been adversely affected by the weather situation.

As the school will be closed to all students and staff, the following will be cancelled tomorrow:

  • All classes, including the 400 block
  • The Year 12 RYDA Driver Education programme
  • The Year 10 Social Studies trip
  • All sports practices
  • The Soiree
  • Gateway and Work Experience

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however, the safety of students and staff is of paramount importance. It is envisaged at this stage the College will reopen on Friday, 7 April 2017.  Any potential change to Friday’s arrangements will be posted to the College’s Facebook page and Website.

Canoe Polo Nationals

Congratulations to our Senior Canoe Polo team who competed at the Canoe Polo Nationals in Feilding over the weekend 31 March - 2 April 2017. The team played extremely well against some tough competition and should be proud of their efforts.

Tongariro Trip Cancellation

In light of the serious weather warning issued by MET Service, a decision has been made in conjunction with the Principal to cancel the Year 12 and 13 Geography Tongariro Trip that was due to depart Wednesday, 5 April 2017.

We fully understand that students and staff will be disappointed that the trip is unable to go ahead, however, it is imperative that we take into account these warnings and make the health and safety of those attending our top priority.

At this point we are unable to reschedule the trip, however, we will be in contact with parents/caregivers regarding refund arrangements.

Students Take Part in "Loves Me Not"

On Tuesday 28 March, Awatapu College Year 12 students were part of the first group of students in Palmerston North to be involved in the Loves Me Not programme. The programme, set up by the Sophie Elliot Foundation, is part of an initiative to raise awareness of family harm and prevent abusive behaviour in relationships. As the first school to facilitate this programme, Awatapu College is extremely grateful to the community and the Police for their assistance in making the programme such a success. The students found the programme hugely beneficial and were appreciative of the opportunity to be involved. To read the full article from the NZ Police, please click here.
